It was a beautiful autumn day in the breathtaking Himalayan town of Nainital which resembled a magic land. The beauty of nature was intoxicating and fluffy white clouds drifted lazily above the still waters of the lake. I wanted to be free. I wanted to come out and become one with the God’s most beautiful creation – The Earth and the Universe.
My mother was the principal in a prestigious school and a well-known figure. It was a usual working day for her, my brother; 9years older to me was attending his sports meet. Dad was in Delhi, hundreds of miles away from us. There was nothing uncanny about the day.
Inside my mother’s womb I was still trailing the clouds of glory when my body slowly started refusing to take commands. I was confused and very scared. A life about to start was being threatened by some unknown force.
Outside in the world, my mother had walked down a hill to do some house work oblivious to what was happening inside her. As she pulled an old suitcase from under the bed, a maid noticed a pool of blood near her feet. She felt nothing. Hurriedly urgent calls were made to her doctor, teachers, friends as there were no other family members there.
Quickly a palanquin was brought to carry her to the civil hospital because she could not walk down to the hospital as she had planned. It was a down hill road and not a motorable one. She was going to deliver almost ten days before the due date. The well wishers prayed for her safety and that of the unborn child. The temple bells kept ringing.
My mother was a strong woman who believed in herself and the cosmic energies around and left it to nature and the medical staff to take care of her.
It was a case of Placenta Previa. One of the leading causes of vaginal bleeding in the second and third trimesters. The bleeding was severe and the surgeon advised a c-section without any delay. It was a testing time for each person involved. It was a battle of life and death because too much blood had flowed out.
I lay quietly breathing inside the womb determined not to give up on life.
The doctor had told my mother that they would try to save her but there was hardly any chance of my survival.
As they say destiny is simply the strength of your desires.
We both very strongly desired to live.
After a successful operation I was lifted out and moved to an incubator. It was a miracle of nature and tenacity of life that kept me alive. White as a sheet but breathing, I was kept under observation.
The news had spread, a telegram was sent to my father and the prayers continued in the small hill station. The health minister came to visit to ask about our well-being. It was moment of mixed emotion for everyone.
I decided to defeat death and came out victorious as my body replenished all the blood loss and became absolutely normal within three days.
My mother held me close and we reassured each other of the bond that was going to bind us together for a long time.
As I could not be breast-fed by my mom who was recouping, a friend who had delivered a baby girl three days back gave me the first feed.
A life was supposed to flourish. As my parents always said, maybe I was given this gift of life to fulfill a special purpose on this earth.
It was moment of joyous tears and reflection for all. Things like these make us bow in awe to the supreme creator.
On the second day a sweet little face peeped from the glass of the incubator, a sister addressed sweetly, “baby look at your brother”. My twinkling eyes smiled at him and we knew it was going to be a life long comradeship. I was discovering new bonds of love.
The third morning brought a pleasant gift for me – my dad. Tall and handsome, he looked elated to see me well and happily kicking around beside my mom. I felt jubilant as he held me in his strong arms. I was glad to have survived the battle of life.
I have heard the story of my miraculous birth many a time and each time it is a reminder that I fought against all odds to be alive and make my presence felt in this world.
My parents had always wanted a daughter and it was a dream come true for them.
After a few days we, mother and daughter, regaining our health, went home amidst prayers, blessings, joy and jubilation.
